Introduction to.. Malimo
Malimo is a Berlin based label with a playful aesthetic for the free spirited. All pieces are limited edition, made from upcycled materials and in fair conditions, with recycled packaging and labels. They plant trees in Nepal and Madagascar with every purchase made Eden Projects
Hi guys, tell us a little about yourself and how you created your label!
We are Johannes & Isabell, the Founders of Malimo. We did not go to design school. Instead we went to travel the world for almost two years. When in India we couldn’t help but fall in love with all the loud colours and rich patterns. All the unique designs we had not seen before in Europe inspired us. Quite spontaneously we build a close relationship to our current tailor. He shares our values of worship for people and planet. It was an instant match. Since then we have been growing MALIMO together. We have so much fun doing it.
All your pieces are upcycled - how do you get inspired when designing new pieces?
We find inspiration in traveling to far away places like India and Indonesia. As well as through traveling in time. We do love to learn about fashion history. Researching what political and social occurrences shaped the vintage looks we know today helps us to understand more of the bigger picture. We like to have traditional elements in our designs and mix them with current trends. The bomber jacket for example is a piece with a long, interesting history. Our goal is to design pieces which represent our day and age and are yet timeless.
For us here at Aequem sustainability is everything. Tell us what sustainability means to you and Malimo?
We both personally come from a very alternative background. Most of our friends are vegetarian, buy organic foods and mainly go by bicycle. For us sustainability is a lifestyle we have grew up with. It feels natural to buy our coffee with our own reusable cup or mason jar. We are very aware of the impact the fashion world, or huge brands in general, have on our planet. For us sustainability is the only way to go, and we built MALIMO accordingly. We avoid plastic waste where we can, reuse our returned shipping boxes and plant ten trees for every purchase.
We love the relaxed vibe of your brand! How did you develop this aesthetic?
When we started it was the time of minimalism. Plain, white, grey and black. That really bored us and we went for a more fun and more bold alternative. We found especially fair & sustainable fashion lacked in funkiness so we decided to disrupt it.
That sounds great! Here at Aequem one of our goals is to show everyone how cool sustainable fashion can be!.. How or wear do you like to wear your pieces?
In any given moment at any given place really. We had a 75 year old lady buying one of our jackets for a wedding. The next day an 18 year old dude bought one for skating.
Okay, so now more about you…
Johannes always wanted to be an inventor or magician. Isabell’s biggest dream was to be a detective superintendent. I guess, now we are stuck in fashion for a bit.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
Both of us are pretty big believers in having a morning routine: making the bed, drinking lemon water, meditating, a quick yoga session followed by a good coffee while journaling.
If you could wear only one thing for the rest of your life what would it be? (not including your fave pieces from your label, obviously.)
Probably a cashmere tracksuit. Comfort 100.
If you were a celebrity, who would you be?
Richard Branson, if you could call him a celebrity. Living on Neckar island should not be too shabby.
Oh yes, we totally can!.. We think he is pretty cool too! Out of your current collection, which is your favourite piece and why?
Our current favourite is our dancing bird reversible bomber jacket. You can wear it inside out, that’s a big pro. Either you go full funky with our lovely dancing bird design or you simply go all plain, almost invisible. That’s clothing which adjusts to you current mood and situation.
It has been great getting to know more about you and Malimo, if you could give one piece of advice to our readers to take away with them, what would it be?
We are all one. We are all breathing humans, living on the earth striving for love. Do not focus on differences but on similarities.
Thank you Johannes and Isabell, It was lovely to have you!
