Introduction to.. Cariki

Cariki is streetwear made for those who want to stand out from the crowd and those who are bold enough to take risks. They use carbon neutral organic cotton, natural fibres and salvaged materials. We have sat down with Tom and Sam the founders, to find out a little more about them and their story.

Hello Tom and Sam, tell us a little about yourselves and how you created Cariki!

Cariki’s story starts in New Zealand, where we spent a few months driving around the beautiful landscape with the sole purpose of having fun. One of the topics discussed on our travels was the possibility of creating a clothing brand with a difference, one which produces subtle yet bold designs whilst limiting the impact on the environment.

The more we thought about this and the more we learnt about how devastating the fashion industry is to our planet, the more we knew we had to turn our ideas into reality.

The name Cariki can be traced to the Maori word for chief or king.

As we grow and develop, our ideas continue to be shaped by the ever-increasing number of articles uncovering the truth about this industry, and these are just the tip of the iceberg! Each article we read gives us fresh motivation to carry on.

About our Brand:

Think of your favourite fashion focused, urban styled clothing brands… Now add a foundation built upon ethics and sustainability. This is what Cariki is, and it represents so much more than your average retailer - It represents a coming revolution in the world of fashion.

We are focused on design that will inspire millennials to switch to more responsible fashion choices.

Every decision we make is with the environment in mind. We are aware that most teens and twenty-somethings are sensitive to climate issues, but might not know where to start when it comes to sustainable fashion. We are trying to build that bridge that will help people take easy steps in the right direction.

Our Principles

We live in an age where climate change is becoming a very real and present issue. Millennials have been educated about the need to look after the environment, yet hardly anyone is aware that fashion is one of the most devastating industries on our planet. According to some experts, the textile industry is the second largest polluter, second only to oil.

At Cariki, it is our mission to help bring about change. We take our sourcing very seriously, choosing a range of ethical and sustainable materials including organic cotton, recycled polyester, tencel and bamboo. We partner only with factories who have the highest levels of certifications and accreditations, and work only with those who can provide us with proof of responsible production. Wherever possible, we are trying to minimize waste and reuse packaging, using water based Okeo-Tex approved dyes.

Most importantly perhaps, we are trying to help spread the message about sustainable apparel.

It is our mission to make sustainable fashion affordable and accessible to everyone. Ultimately, our goal is to be able to compete with regular fashion brands and to one day make sustainable clothing the norm.

Wow! This is exactly how we feel here at Aequem! So cool to see so many of us really working towards making a difference!

All your pieces are designed in-house - how do you get inspired when designing new pieces?

We are always looking to take inspiration from everything around us, trusting our instincts and cherry picking from upcoming trends. We like to be adventurous, testing out new ideas and seeing if they work for us. For us, we stick to a very simple motto - only design something we would wear ourselves and to love every piece.

For us here at Aequem sustainability is everything. Tell us what sustainability means to you and Cariki?

Sustainability is for us an amazing way of being creative with materials, be it by using recycled fabrics or new and innovative textiles like tencel. We are always trying to experiment with these fibres to produce ever more responsible alternatives that both look and feel great.

There is no one size fits all solution, but the more we push the boundaries of sustainable fashion, the more innovations and exciting discoveries can be found.

How or where do you like to wear your pieces?

Cariki is great for any and every occasion! Perfect for a night out, a festival, the everyday or just lounging around at home. Our bamboo t-shirts have been especially acclaimed as great for exercise and super soft to sleep in.

We have incredibly high standards when it comes to new products, ensuring that each item we release is built to last whilst maintaining our dedication to the environment, style and comfort.

Okay, so now more about you…

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

S: Tom likes to do exercise - every morning he wakes up a little earlier than necessary so that he can squeeze in at least 20 minutes. He believes that working up a bit of a sweat helps to clear his mind and gets him ready for the day ahead. He claims that it takes a bit of getting used to before it becomes a habit, but once it is part of your routine you won’t want to miss out on it.

T: Sam, on the other hand, loves her sleep and the first thing she does is check her phone before dashing to the shower, realising she is probably late again!

If you could wear only one thing for the rest of your life what would it be? (not including your fave pieces from your label, obviously.)

I love my Birkenstocks and could honestly wear them all day every day.

Out of your current collection, which is your favourite piece and why?

Our bamboo range - if you have never worn bamboo clothing before then you are in for a real treat when you first put these on! They feel super soft and are kind to skin, like having a silk blanket wrapped around you.

It has been great getting to know more about you and Cariki, if you could give one piece of advice to our readers to take away with them, what would it be?

Small actions carried out on a consistent basis can become a powerful force for change in any area that you choose to focus in.

We could not agree more! Also, don't forget to subscribe to not miss out on any news!
