Introduction to.. Black Verveine

Black Verveine is a French label that combines a minimalist aesthetic with geometric, innovative designs. They use luxurious organic materials to create statement, playful and timeless pieces.

Hello Aurélie, tell us a little about yourself and how you created Black Verveine!

I’m the founder and designer of Black Verveine, a creative and sustainable womenswear brand, from France (Nantes) and produced locally.

Since I was child, I wanted to be a fashion designer. My dream came true. I started to work for a Parisian brand and then I worked for “Fast Fashion”. After some of years, I was fed up to design cheap and polluting pieces which have a bad impact on the environment and humans. I worked for denim fashion, one of the most polluting clothing being jeans!

So I left my fashion designer job and in 2014 I launched my own label Black Verveine in accordance with my ideas and lifestyle. The first collection was out for Fall 2015.

“Black” is omnipresent in our collections and “Verveine” in French which means “verbena” alludes to used organic fabrics.

All your pieces are aesthetic and sustainable – how do you get inspired when designing new pieces?

I’m inspired by architecture, contemporary art, design and nature.
Graphic lines and contrasts are strong in our collections. I really love combining this style with prints inspired by nature, particularly ocean flora and fauna.

For us here at Aequem sustainability is everything. Tell us what sustainability means to you and Black Verveine.

Sustainability is the new way of life of the 21th century.
After industrialization and productivity, it’s time to be conscious of the different damages done. It’s time to put the human beings, animals and nature squarely back in the centre of the debate.

In my opinion, “sustainable” means both ethical and eco-friendly.

Fashion can’t be sustainable if it isn’t eco-friendly. We can’t separate these 2 aspects. Sustainable fashion designers mustn’t use polluting raw materials. People who live close to conventional fibers fields (like conventional cotton), farmers and textile workers risk their own health for fashion.
I think 'Sustainability' needs to be applied to the entire fashion chain, from the growing of the raw material to the production and sale of clothing, the same with Transparency.

We love timeless about your pieces. How did you develop this aesthetic?

I really love to play with different styles, a mix of l “Male/ Female”, sportswear chic, both graphism and poetry by a minimalist way. I like to combine various organic materials in an original way to create an urban image of the ethical fashion style. I want women feel free to wear our pieces at any time and everywhere.

How or wear do you like to wear your pieces?

We think our collections in order to wear it during the day or evening. Only the accesorisation changes, I can wear pieces, for example with sneakers or booties, with an organic tote bag or luxury bag.

Okay, so now more about you…

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

I start on drinking hot water from my thermos bottle close to me in order to clean and awake my body. Then I can combat a hard day of work! (lol)

If you could wear only one thing for the rest of your life what would it be? (not including your fave pieces from your label, obviously.)

A little soft black dress!

If you were a celebrity, who would you be?

I don’t know exactly who, but I would like to be a truly engaged star, socially and environmentally active.

Out of your current collection, which is your favourite piece and why?

“Obsession” dress is my favourite dress because It has a little touch of colour and brightness with the organic silk Dupion. It is both sportswear and sophisticated, I wear it all year round, with sandals or booties, with or without cardigan and the interlock mesh is so soft.

It has been great getting to know more about you and Black Verveine, if you could give one piece of advice to our readers to take away with them, what would it be?

Buy less choose well.

Thank you so much for your time and please keep doing what you are doing!! Readers, don't forget to subscribe! :)
