Introduction to.. Another Jewel
The aim of Another Jewel is to create perfectly imperfect minimal pieces for an individual style where no two pieces are the same. Based in a little home studio in Copenhaguen, the label uses recycled materials bought from a little shop in London to create its special pieces.
Hello Sara Kristine, tell us a little about yourself and how you created Another Jewel!
Hi there, I’m from Copenhagen - Denmark, I live with my English boyfriend (whom I met in England) and our old dog, he is 13.
I moved to London when I was 21 because I felt pressured to get an education and I wasn’t sure what to study. I think that Denmark is known for its good educational system, which is great if you are a “school type of person”.
I have always wanted to have my own “thing” but what it should be has been difficult to work out. I’ve always been creative and wanted to do something creative but I’m also not very competitive and I don’t like things to be a hard job. Basically I just wanted to create…
I was working as an Assistant Manager at a busy North West London Pub and loved it but at one point I got fed up by giving everything to a place that actually wasn’t mine and that was when Another Jewel was created. It’s been a long journey getting into the right mindset and also wanting it to one day become a living I feel like the journey has just begun but it’s now about four years ago since I left my job in the pub and about three years my boyfriend and I moved back to Copenhagen.
All your pieces handmade and sustainable with this minimal aesthetic - how do you get inspired when designing new pieces?
I get really inspired by architecture, streets, art and sculptures. I love architecture (any age and style) but the minimal and cubistic types mainly inspire me and from that I try to create timeless pieces.
I don’t create seasonal collections. The collection I have now is that one collection and then I will add new designs and take out others but I will always aim for them all to match in one way or another.
For us here at Aequem sustainability is everything. Tell us what sustainability means to you and Another Jewel?
Sustainability is a lifestyle I believe. It’s not something I have ever thought of that sustainability is something that you can do or be. I’ve always been conscious about waste and I’ve never been one to shop a lot. It was not before Instagram I learned about sustainability and it just made sense to me. I started to resource into how silver and gold was produced (this was before I took Another Jewel to the next level) and what a more sustainable way would be and found that I have all along been using recycled material which was just great. I decided that I would aim to make Another Jewel as sustainable as possible as I don’t see any other options.
Exactly! We totally agree. We also really like that you want to create timeless jewellery. How did you develop this aesthetic?
I want Another Jewel to become a special piece of jewellery that will be worn everyday for any occasion.
By creating timeless pieces that don't follow a trend I believe that it is a more sustainable way of designing, for example a ring will be worn for lifetime rather than one year and then it goes out of fashion and is just in a drawer somewhere.
I’m aware that saying something is timeless is difficult but that’s my aim.
How or wear do you like to wear your pieces?
I’m very much a ring and earrings person, I have rings that I wear everyday, which have almost become a part of my DNA. I change out my earrings based on my mood.
Okay, so now more about you…
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
I roll out of bed, pee (sorry but that’s the very first thing I do) and then take my dog for a walk. He’s literally staring at me when my alarm rings and wagging his tail.
Then I eat brekkie with a coffee and then I usually have one more coffee.
If you could wear only one thing for the rest of your life what would it be? (not including your fave pieces from your label, obviously.)
Probably just an easy and simple strap dress (and then living in a hot country so I don’t get cold).
If you were a celebrity, who would you be?
Out of your current collection, which is your favourite piece and why?
I love the Octopussy ring. Mixed sterling silver and gold but it also requires a bit of work. I like it because of, I think, the design process and how it came out and then the name.
It started out just being a sterling silver ring with different sizes holes and I wore that for a while. Then one day I thought I wanted to add some gold to my collection and thought what if I add small circles around the holes of this ring, which I did. On the day I was creating the Octopussy ring, it was the Women's International Day and I looked at the ring and thought it looked like an Octopus arm and 'pussypower' was all over the internet and therefore the name.
I also like the Brick C ring as that was my very first design to the collection. I got inspired by male signature rings and manholes (yes odd) it was actually supposed to be a male ring and it is sort of a unisex design I think.
It has been great getting to know more about you and Another Jewel, if you could give one piece of advice to our readers to take away with them, what would it be?
If you want to have a more sustainable lifestyle then start with what makes sense to you and then you can slowly start building and adding. For me it’s reducing waste, in any shape and form.
