Intro to.. Maqu
Maqu designs are clothing made with timeless aesthetic, innovative fabric, and sustainable manufacturing methods only. All products are handmade in Germany and Perú, designed individually by founder Marisa in her studio in Berlin. Maqu stands for everything that it is: timeless, minimalistic, and sustainable. Excited to add her collection to Aequem, we sat down with Marisa to get to know more about her and Maqu's trailblazing force in the sustainable fashion industry:
Hello Marisa, tell us a little about yourself and how you created your label!
Hello, I’m Marisa, the designer behind the label Maqu. My journey starts in Lima where I come from. I grew up seeing my grandmother’s clothing production and I wore the prototypes she made for kids. She taught me how to make my own clothes. I went to study Fashion Design and Photography. At the same time, I worked with designers and artists in Lima. In 2013, I moved to Copenhagen to work with 2 designers. In 2015, I moved to Berlin to develop my own project. I started to work some pieces and shoes with leftover clothing. In 2016, I designed the first collection for Maqu. I wanted to combine Art and Design with social, ecological and sustainable practice. Our pieces are made with 100% certified organic fabrics.
What would you say is unique about your pieces? How do you get inspired when designing new pieces?
Maqu focuses on a minimalist and practical design. The designs are not only a visual, but also a tactile experience. I can say I design my favourites pieces when I listen classical music. I find beauty in my everyday life and can see some kind of details on the street by travelling. I try to convert these ideas into real clothes.
For us here at Aequem sustainability is everything. Tell us what sustainability means to you and label?
Sustainability can be only one word, but it means everything. For us it means how you manage your resources, how you consume, and how you work with people. It is tradition. It is our lifestyle because we are putting all this together to try to make a change. The same criteria is applied for the label. Maqu is who we are.
How did you develop your aesthetic?
I was always interested in basic & practical pieces with bold details. Maqu is a mix of this practicability, every collection is a challenge for me because I start to draw and at the end I can’t choose it all. I’m very careful when I start to tell a story, but at the same time, I use my instinct.
How or where do you like to wear your pieces?
With totally freedom. I like to wear in all kind of situations ;)
Okay, so now more about you…
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
I think, “Uy, what a dream I had last night!” then I want to drink my cup a coffee (my husband makes a morning a cup of coffee ready for me every day)
If you could wear only one thing for the rest of your life what would it be? (not including your fave pieces from your label, obviously.)
A long gray oversized dress.
If you were a celebrity, who would you be?
Yoda or Bjork.
Out of your current collection, which is your favourite piece and why?
I wear the Island dress, a long dress very light and soft, super easy to wear and I love the color. It reminds me a flower, in German it is called Mohnblume, I think in English it is a red poppy.
It has been great getting to know more about you and your label, if you could give one piece of advice to our readers to take away with them, what would it be?
Step by step and together we can make a change. Always positive!
