Interview with.. Mari Anes

Mariañes is a label founded on sustainable principles, with a classic and timeless design. The pieces are made with soft fabrics: natural textiles, including 100% organic cotton and sustainably produced silk. The garments are hand-tailored in Bali using centuries-old techniques and supporting local craftspeople. We sat down with the founder to hear more about the label and their journey so far.

Hello Maria, tell us a little about yourself and how you created your label!

Hi, I’m Maria. I’m from Bali. I started my first label in 2010. I set up Mariañes three years ago because my focus had changed. I’d begun exploring sustainability and wanted to create a label that reflected that as well as my shifting taste. So natural fabrics -  silk, organic cotton, linen, as well as natural and low impact dyes.

All your pieces are so beautiful and we feel like they are just perfect for any occasion - how do you get inspired when designing new pieces?

I do a lot of travel and a lot of Vipassana meditation. I think both these experiences feed into my design approach, translating as simplicity, freedom of movement and a classic feel. With just a hint of caprice!

For us here at Aequem sustainability is everything. Tell us what sustainability means to you and Marianes?

Sustainability isn’t just sourcing responsibly, paying fair wages and minimising environmental impact. It’s creating clothing that lasts. So there’s an attentiveness in how we make garments and that hopefully translates into how they are worn. We want to create pieces that are easy to love for a long time.

We love the timelessness of your garments. How did you develop this aesthetic?

Thanks! I guess with Mariañes I’m shooting for timeless, classic appeal, based on graceful silhouettes, soft fabrics and an absolute insistence on comfort. I love clothes that create fluid, shifting shapes as you move. They’re understated – as expressive as you choose to be.

How or wear do you like to wear your pieces?

I think they’re pretty versatile – the silk dresses can be statement pieces, but work just as well for more casual occasions. Most pieces work as is - I like to mix things up with denim sometimes and other comfortable pieces depending on what I’m up to.

Okay, so now more about you…

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

Ideally - meditation, lemon water, yoga, green juice, breakfast, work…

If you could wear only one thing for the rest of your life what would it be? (not including your fave pieces from your label, obviously.)

Anything black.

If you were a celebrity, who would you be?

“Genuineness only thrives in obscurity – like celery.” – Aldous Huxley

Out of your current collection, which is your favourite piece and why?

Right now I’m really loving the naturally dyed silk jersey

It has been great getting to know more about you and Mariañes, if you could give one piece of advice to our readers to take away with them, what would it be?

Buy what you believe you’ll love for a long time.

Thank you so much Maria for your time!
