AEQUEM X BLANC - 7 Tips to Reduce Your Fashion Environmental Impact

7 Tips to Reduce Your Fashion Environmental Impact

With fashion accounting for around 10% of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, we have reached the point where we need to reimagine everything about the fashion industry. Many elements contribute to the high environmental impact the fashion industry has on the planet and its resources – from the production of the fabrics to the afterlife of the clothes.

Mainstream brands are increasingly concerned about this impact and we can see more and more sustainable fashion brands emerging, as well some collectives & charities taking care of recycling or giving a second life to clothes. But the consumer use phase happening in the middle is often overlooked, even though 50% of the greenhouse gas emissions from clothing takes place in this stage. The good news is that this is the part of the garment’s lifespan which you can actually have an effect on, by caring for your clothes in a way that will make them last.

This is why we’ve teamed up with BLANC, a garment care specialist offering expert non-toxic alternatives to traditional dry cleaning which delivers a better quality clean andis kinder to your skin, your clothes and our planet. As the country’s leading eco dry cleaner, they know the importance of caring for your wardrobe and have shared their best tips to help you lower your overall fashion impact on the planet and eco up your laundry routine. Because the most sustainable fashion is the one you already have.

1. Wash less

To reduce both energy and water use, we suggest to only wash your clothes when it’s actually necessary. If your garment hasn’t been put through a sweaty workout or a morning coffee spill incident, you can definitely wear them more than once before throwing them into the washing machine. For clothes that are not too dirty, airing, steaming and brushingthem can be enough.

2. Wash at lower temperatures

Washing at 30°C or 40°C (often lower than stated on the care label) can help you save a lot of energy. In fact, 90% of the energy when using your washing machine is used to heat up the water and only 10% is used to power the motor. Not to mention that it will make your clothes last longer as high temperatures are notgood friends with textile fibres and wear them out.

3. Use a Guppyfriend washing bag

We recommend having a Guppy Friend Washing Bagto hand. It is a scientifically approved solution against microplastic pollution that filters out even the tiniest microfibres that shed from our clothes when washing. The washing bags not only help to stop microplastic pollution but also protects and prolongs the life of your clothes.

4. Mend and tailor your clothes

When it comes to mending your clothes, we want to change the norm. Instead of replacing your garment with a new one, repair the one you already have. We are strong believers that clothes that are worth buying and wearing, are worth repairing! At the end of the day, your most sustainable option when it comes to fashion is using the clothes already hanging in your wardrobe.

5. Invest in timeless pieces

Invest in style, not in trends. Try not to get stuck in season-specific fashion or micro trends that may be out of style in a few months. Think a classic handbag, a quality coat, a pair of well-fitting jeans and so forth. A good test for new clothes you’re thinking about buying is, as Livia Firth once suggested, to think to yourself: will I wear this a minimum of thirty times? If yes, go ahead. If the answer is no, don’t buy it. You’ll be surprised how many times the answer is not to buy it.

6. Use eco-friendly laundry detergents

Just like for the food we eat, checking labels for cosmetics and cleaning products that are in contact with our skin is essential. Conventional laundry detergents contain toxic chemicals, which can have a negative impact on our health as well as the environment. Our range of eco-friendly detergentsis curated from carefully selected brands that are as determined to leave the right kind of planet to our children as we are.

7. Make the switch to eco dry cleaning

For the clothes you have that require a professional clean, one more thing you can do is to quit the conventional dry cleaner and look for a professional eco cleaner like BLANC. Based on non-toxic, biodegradable detergents and pure water, our “wet cleaning” technology does not require the use of toxic solvents to be highly effective - rather the use of very sophisticated machines, which were developed by Electrolux, programmed by us and calibrated to be just the right amount of gentle on fibres and tough on stains.

We hope you feel inspired to give your beloved wardrobe some extra love! You can either drop your clothes off at one of the BLANC stores or simply book a pickup and delivery online! They will help you prolong the life of your most beloved clothes, for many years to come.
